Microsoft and Yahoo team up against Google

Bing is the thing - that's the gist of a new 10-year web search deal between Microsoft and Yahoo.

Under the deal, Microsoft's Bing search engine will be the sole provider of search and paid search technology for all of Yahoo's websites.

Yahoo will sell premium search ads for both companies. Yahoo says the partnership will boost its annual operating income by about US$500 million. But beyond that, Yahoo and Microsoft hope to challenge the dominance of search leader Google.

"This is the best and last chance that both Microsoft and Yahoo have at trying to make a dent against Google in the search market," says Tuon Tran, associate director of research, Morningstar.

There is no upfront payment to Yahoo, just a revenue sharing agreement, that gives Yahoo an initial rate of 88 percent of search revenue on its sites for the first five years. Many believe that was a big concession from Yahoo.

"To the extent that that Yahoo said they sacrificed an upfront payment to get more share I think is just lip service and given the choice I think Yahoo would have preferred to get one billion or two billion dollars up front but they couldn't 'because Yahoo didn't really have any other choice other than trying to go it alone," says Tran.

Google currently has 65 percent market share, compared to Yahoo's 19 percent and Microsoft's 8 percent. The deal follows Microsoft's failed 2008 effort to acquire Yahoo with an unsolicited offer of nearly US$45 billion.

Because the search deal wont' close until early next year, Google has time to get ready. says Standard & Poor's Analyst Scott Kessler:

"That gives Google a window of opportunity we think to lock up affiliate partners perhaps at less favourable terms and pricing than Google had received in the past. If they are looking for new business, maybe Google is going to offer more just to insure that they have a more favourable competitive landscape."

But it's still a game of catch up, that will keep both Yahoo and Microsoft on the chase.

How to Detect Missing DLL File Errors?

When a DLL file is corrupt or missing you may receive an error message similar to the one given below when you run a program that needs to use this DLL file:

Cannot find the file Program_Name.exe.

In the error message Program_Name represents the name of the program or name of one of its components in which the error occurred.

This error message is usually followed by an error message similar to the one given below:

Error starting program. A required .DLL file DLL_Name.DLL was not found.

Here, DLL_Name is the name of the DLL file that is causing the error.

What Causes Missing DLL File Errors?

There can be many causes of missing DLL errors. Some of the most common causes are:

* An essential system file required by the program you are using has been deleted. This may happen when a program is uninstalled/installed or you have tried to clean up space on the hard disk.
* A virus infection has infected the required DLL file.
* DLL entries in the Windows registry are corrupt

How to Fix Missing DLL File Errors

The following are some of the methods that you can use to resolve issues related to missing DLL files.

Method 1: Reinstall the program that is generating the error message.

Reinstalling the program replaces any missing or damaged program files with their original version. This step also helps in rectifying problems in the Windows registry related to this program.

Method 2: Reinstall the recently installed program.

Sometimes, when you uninstall a program, some of the shared DLL files required by other programs on your computer may also get removed. This may lead to missing DLL file errors when you try to use programs that require the removed DLL files.

In this case, the best way to resolve the problem is to reinstall the program you removed. Doing this will copy and register the required files on the system again.

Method 3: Update the program or device driver that you may have installed recently

If you have recently installed a new program or device driver, it is quite likely that some of the existing DLL files are overwritten by their older versions. In this case, to resolve the error, try to search for any updates for this new program. If you find an update, download and install it to try and resolve the error. You may also try to download the newer version of the DLL file from the Internet or another computer with a similar configuration as yours and copy it your computer.

If nothing works, you may need to use the System Restore to revert your system to the time when no error occurred on the PC.

Method 4: Repair your Windows registry

In order to work, all DLL files need to be registered in the Windows registry. If the registry entries related to one or more DLL files are corrupt, missing DLL errors may be generated. To prevent this problem, you must perform registry scan and repair and maintain an error-free registry. To easily perform this task on a regular basis, you may use a reliable registry tool, such as RegGenie.

Method 5: Scan and remove virus infections

Malicious virus infections may cause damage to existing DLL files and generate errors. To resolve this issue, you must use an efficient antivirus tool, such as AntiVirus Plus to perform a full system scan of your computer and remove all malware data from it. An antivirus tool helps in repairing infected files and restoring your computer back to it’s normal working state. Before performing the scan, you must update your antivirus tool. Additionally, it is recommended that you perform the scan in Safe Mode to make it more effective.

Could not stop the Windows service-name service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Note: Here, service_name represents that name of the Managed Windows service you are tying to stop or pause.

Cause of the Error

This error usually occurs when there are some problems between the service you are trying to stop/pause and the Advapi32.dll file. This DLL file is part of one of the advanced API services library that supports several APIs that include several security and registry calls.

Technical explanation: When you attempt to stop or pause a service, the OnStop method is directly called by the ServiceBase class directly from the Service common handler. This handler is defined in the ScDispatcherLoop of Advapi32.dll. If this ScDispatcherLoop thread is unable to receive any new service command from the service control manager it is marked as time out and error 1053 is displayed.

How To Fix “Setup Was Unable To Find The MSI Package” Error?

If your PC is behind a proxy server, then the following error message may be displayed when you attempt to install a program on your Windows computer:

"Setup was unable to find the MSI package.“

Steps to See Proxy Configuration

To see if your computer is behind a proxy server, perform the following tasks:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
3. Select Connections.
4. On this tab, select the LAN Settings button to check your Internet Connections settings.
5. If the Use proxy server for this connection check box is selected it implies that you are trying to install your software from behind a proxy server.

Workaround Solutions

To workaround this issue, you may use one of the following solutions:

Method 1: Use another connection that connects directly to the Internet.

Many software programs that are installed using the Windows Installer utility start the installation process directly from the Internet. However, your proxy server may not allow this Web activity over the Internet and your installation process may fail.

To workaround, try to connect to the Internet using some other method. For instance, you may try to use a Dial-up Connection or a direct LAN connection that does not require you to go through a proxy server. Also, open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. Here, clear the Use proxy server for this connection check box and then select the Automatic detect settings checkbox. Click OK twice to save your settings.

Method 2: Download the installation files to your system.

If possible, try to download the installation package of the software you are trying to install on your computer and then perform the installation locally.

To do this, perform the following steps:

1. Open Start menu, and then select Run.
2. Type the following command and then press Enter:

msiexec /i http://CompleteURLToProdcutWebsite/DownloadFileName.ms i

Here, CompleteURLToProdcutWebsite represents the URL of the Website from where you are trying to download the software package that is installed using the Windows Installer utility. Additionally, DownloadFileName.msi represents the name of the msi file that installs the software package.

When you run this command, the msi file is downloaded from its Web site and the installation process is carried out locally on your computer.

Troubleshooting Memory Problems In System

It is fairly common for computer users to come across problems associated with memory. These problems can be resolved if computer users are aware of troubleshooting methods and are able to correctly diagnose them on their own.

One of the first steps in troubleshooting memory-related problems is to ensure that the origin of the problem is really the memory. To do this, you may start by asking the following questions:

1. Have you recently purchased your PC? If the problem is encountered on a new PC, it may be a good idea to contact the vendor for fixing the problem because the system might still be under warranty.
2. Have you upgraded memory by adding new memory chips? Quite often, memory errors occur if we add incompatible or faulty chips. If this is the case, you may resolve the error by replacing the problematic chips. Also, you must ensure that your memory chips are properly seated in their slots.
3. Have you recently installed a new software? If your answer is yes, then it is quite likely that this new software is behind all the errors. In this case, ensure that all the latest updates and patches are installed. At times, problems may occur if the program was not installed properly. If this is the case, then re-installing the software may resolve the error. Also, if you are trying to run a memory-intensive software on an older system, you may face problems. In this case, you may either have to uninstall your software or upgrade your PC.
4. Have you recently installed a new hardware? If a new hardware has been recently installed or removed from the machine, one must check whether there are any loose connections or if the new hardware is working properly.

If the above potential causes have been eliminated, then one must start to investigate the possibility of memory problems. The common symptoms of memory problems and their troubleshooting tips are listed below:

Symptom: Blank Screen

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Confirm that the VGA card and memory chips are installed properly.
2. Make sure that the motherboard and memory chips are compatible with each other.

Symptom: PC hangs or reboots again

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Verify whether the computer has adequate memory.
2. Check if there is any fault in the power supply.
3. Make sure that there is no corrosion between memory chip and socket.

Symptom: Your computer reports memory problems

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Check your CMOS settings to check for “memory mismatch” errors.
2. Memory chips are incompatible-in this case, you may also encounter problems comprising information related to memory address error, memory failure, memory parity interrupt, and memory verification error. The best way to check for incompatible memory is to remove the new chips to see if the error goes away. If it does, you may have to get new compatible memory chips.

Symptom: Your computer enters General protection fault.

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Reboot your system because this problem usually occurs when two software programs are trying to access the same memory resource.
2. If the problems occurs soon after adding new memory chips then replace these chips with compatible ones to resolve the error.

At times, memory related problems may also occur if your registry is damaged or your hard disk is filled up and cluttered. You can fix registry problems with the help of reliable registry tool, such as RegGenie. To fix your hard disk problems, you may use the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter tools that come with your Windows operating system. On Windows Vista, you may also use the Memory Diagnostics tool that comes with the operating system to check your memory chips and identify the problems.

Windows Installer 3.1 Upgrade Problems

If you have Windows Installer 3.1 on your computer, then the installation of a Microsoft Windows Installer (.msi) package may fail if the installer attempts to install a more current version of a system file that is being protected by the Windows File Protection (WFP) feature. Additionally, you may notice Windows Installer Error 1931 is added to the Windows Installer log or the Application log

Additional Information: WFP is a feature that helps in protecting Windows operating systems and other program files, usually with file name extensions, .dll, .exe, .ocx, and .sys. Some True Type fonts may also be protected by the feature. Primarily, file signatures and catalog files are used to ensure that the files being protected are correct Microsoft versions. WFP allows these files to be replaced only when a hotfix is installed by using the Update.exe or HOtfix.exe, or if the Operating System is upgraded using Winnt32.exe or a Windows Update is performed.

Cause of the Error

Windows Installers that were released before the version 3.1 allowed the silent installation process to continue even if the software package you were trying to install failed to install a later version of the file that was protected by WFP.

However, this behavior changed with Windows Installer 3.1. If the silent installation process fails to update a file that is protected by WFP, the installation process rolls back.

Resolution Method

The resolution methods for this issue depend on whether you are the end user of a package being installed or you are the developer who is creating the Windows Installer Package that is generating the problem.

Method 1: Use this method if you are the end user of the installation package.

This error usually occurs if you have the Windows Installer 3.1 version 1 installed on your PC. To check the version of Windows Installer on your computer, perform the following steps:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the C:\Window\System32 folder.

Note: Here, C: represents the system root folder in which your Windows is installed.

1. Here, locate the Msi.dll file and then right-click on it.
2. Select Properties.
3. Open the Version tab.
* If the file version is 3.1.4000.1823, it implies that you have Windows Installer 3.1 version 1 on your computer.
* If the file version is 3.1.4000.2435, it implies that you have Windows Installer 3.1 version 2 on your computer.

If you have Windows Installer 3.1 version 1 on the system, then you will have to upgrade to version 2 to repair the error. To do this, open the 893803 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/) Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) Web page and then download and install the update on your computer.

Method 1: Use this method if you are creating a Windows Installer package.

When creating an installer package for your application, it is recommended that in the Windows Installer database you create, that you set a condition that prevents WFP-components from installing on computers with the WFP feature.

For more information on how to set the condition, you may refer to the Microsoft MSDN Web site.

The following stop error may generate on your Windows 2000 computer due to a hardware problem:

“STOP: 0x0000002E (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
DATA_BUS_ERROR”

Here,

Parameter 1 displays the virtual address due to which the fault occurred.
Parameter 2 displays the physical address due to which the fault occurred.
Parameter 3 depicts Processor Status Register (PSR).
Parameter 4 depicts Faulting Instruction Register (FIR).

Cause of the Error

The error message usually indicates a parity error in the system memory or RAM. The following are some of the items that are known to generate the stop error:

* Failure or defects in hardware components, especially in defective RAM chips, video RAM and L2 RAM cache.
* Incompatible or mismatched hardware components. For instance, you may have RAM chips with different speeds on the same system.
* A buggy driver trying to access the 0x8xxxxxxx address range that does not map to a real physical address.
* Virus infection in the Master Boot Record (MBR).
* Physical problems with the hard disk.

Resolution Methods

1. If the error starts appearing soon after you add a new hardware, remove it, to check if the error is resolved. If it is, then there is some problem with the new hardware-it is either defective or is not compatible with your system.
2. Use the hardware diagnostics utility to check if the error has occurred due to an existing hardware on your computer. On Windows Vista, you may use the memory diagnostics utility to run tests and ensure that all your RAM chips are working fine. If an error is reported, you may have to get the faulty hardware repaired or replaced to resolve the stop error.
3. If the error still remains, open up your PC and check that all hardware adaptors and cable connectors are properly seated in their slots. You may also clean the hardware components to remove any dust deposits from them.
4. If you encounter an error on a new system, then ensure that BIOS and driver updates have been installed. A new PC is usually under warranty. Therefore, you may even contact your PC vendor for a solution.
5. If the stop error follows are recent new driver installation or driver update, then this new driver might be buggy and causing the error. In this case, it is recommended that you uninstall this buggy driver and replace it with an error-free driver. You may refer to the System log in the Event Viewer utility to determine the driver that is generating the error. In case the error occurs during the startup process, then you can uninstall it by starting your PC in Safe mode. Finally, if the driver generating the error is part of the PC boot process and you have an NTFS partition on the hard disk, then you may remove the driver by using the Command Console.
6. If a damaged file is causing the error, then you may run the ‘chkdsk /f/r’ command to check your hard disk for errors and fix them. You will have to restart your computer to enable the chkdsk command to perform the task.
7. To check if a virus in the MBR is generating the error, you may use a good antivirus software, such as Antivirus Plus to scan the MBR and remove any virus from it. You may also choose to use a good registry cleaner tool, such as RegGenie to ensure that your registry is healthy and no incorrect or malicious entry within it is behind the errors.
8. If the above methods do not work, try disabling caching-including BIOS cache, internal/external cache, L2 cache, and write-back cache, Shadowing, and BIOS-enabled virus protection feature in CMOS.
9. Lastly, if everything fails, get your motherboard examined for any physical problems. If there are any problems, it is best to replace the motherboard.

Windows 7 Review, Should You Upgrade?

Now that Microsoft is all set to release its much anticipated version of its new operating system, Windows 7, the big question is – Is it worth making the change? Well, if the new features and improvements incorporated in the Windows 7 Release Candidate1 is any indication to go by then the jump to Windows 7 will in fact be worth making.

Windows 7 RC1 (Release Candidate) has shown that Microsoft does not intend to make any earth-shaking changes but has instead opted to fine-tune the operating system to improve productivity and overall usefulness.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will include a feature called Windows XP Mode, which will run XP applications in an XP compatibility box, but to users it will appear as if the applications are running directly in Windows 7. If Microsoft does include this feature (This feature was not included in Windows7 RC1), then it will give the Windows users best of both worlds. XP users can opt for Windows 7 and take advantage of its numerous new features and also run XP as if it were part of Windows 7.

Windows 7 RC1 is a faster and more efficient operating system than the previous Windows versions. It also includes a number of subtle user-interface changes. For instance, the task bar adopts a new feature that Microsoft calls “task bar thumbnail overflow”. Numerous files that are opened in a particular application can be viewed by moving the mouse over its icon on your taskbar. With this feature, when you highlight any file on the list you get a peek at the highlighted window. Also, you can close the window by clicking a small “X”, similar to the thumbnail view.

People who prefer to use the keyboard over the mouse will welcome a new keyboard shortcut for the taskbar that makes it easier for users to jump to an individual window in an application without using the mouse. In addition to the above two points, there are many other useful features that have been included in the Windows 7 RC1 taskbar.

Other user-interface changes include a much improved Windows Explorer and file search utility. For instance, when you search for a file, pieces of information from the file searched are displayed, which is quite helpful in determining whether this file is the one you are looking for or not.

Microsoft has also done a few desktop tweaks in Windows 7 RC1, making it more attractive and useful. All the desktop backgrounds included are quite attractive and entertaining. In Windows RC1, you also have the option to hide the desktop icons and gadgets.

Windows 7 RC1 also includes a few networking improvements that previous versions of Windows PCs lacked. The most notable is the use of option called “HomeGroups”, which provides structure to the process of sharing devices, media files and other files over a home network.

All in all it will be correct to say that Windows 7 RC1 is a much quicker, efficient and attractive operating system when compared to the previous Windows versions and it will be worth investing money in upgrading your PC to Windows 7 when it is released.

Fix ‘Internet Explorer Cannot Display The Webpage’ Error

The following error message may be displayed when you try to access a Web site, using Internet Explorer 7:

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

There can be many causes of this problem. This article covers some basic troubleshooting methods that you can follow to resolve this issue.

Method 1: Check to see if you can open other Web pages

A likely cause of the error message is problems with the Web page you are trying to access. To see if this is the problem, try to open some other Web pages in your Internet Explorer. If everything else is fine, these Web pages will open normally, and if they do, there might be some problem with the Web page you were initially trying to access. The site could be experiencing problems or may have been taken down for some reason.

You may just wait for a while and try to access the Web page again. If the site was taken down for maintenance activity, it should start working once the maintenance activity is complete.

Method 2: Check for Internet Explorer errors using the Network Diagnostics tool

You may use the built-in Network Diagnostics tool to diagnose and resolve any problems with your Internet Explorer 7. To use the tool, perform the following steps:

Open Internet Explorer and then try to access the Web page that is displaying the error.

1. To run the Network Diagnostics tool on this error page in Internet Explorer, click the Diagnose Connection Problems link.
2. If the tool finds any problem with your Internet Explorer, it will try to provide you with the methods that you can use to resolve the error. Follow the steps given in the proposed solution to resolve your problem.

If the tool fails to detect any problems, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Method 3: Reset your modem, router or both

If you connect to the Internet using a modem or a router, you may need to restart it to resolve the ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage’ error. To do this, perform the following steps:

1. Remove the cable that connects your modem or router to the computer.
2. Turn off the modem or router-some devices may not have a power on/off switch, in this case, disconnect the devices from the AC power point.
3. Restart your PC and then turn on your modem or router.
4. Reconnect the modem/router cables and then restart the PC again.
5. After the above steps are done, restart your Internet Explorer and try to access your Web page again.

If the error is still there, proceed to the next step.

Method 4: Clear the Browsing History of your Internet Explorer

To clear the browsing history, perform the following steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer and then on the Tools menu, select the Delete Browsing History command.
2. Here, either click the individual buttons to clear specific browsing history or just hit the Delete allbutton given at the bottom to clean everything in one go.
3. Restart your Internet Explorer and then try to open your Web page again.

If the error is still there, proceed to the next step.

Method 5: Try to open the Web page in the Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) mode

At times, you may encounter the error message if an Internet Explorer Add-on is interfering with the process. When you start Internet Explorer in no Add-on mode, it loads without any add-ons, such as third-party toolbars and ActiveX controls. If your Web page displays in this mode, then it is likely that an Internet Explorer Add-on is interfering with your Web page and preventing the page from displaying in normal mode.

To start your Internet Explorer in no Add-ons mode, select Start >> All Programs >>Accessories >>System Tools >> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If you are able to access your Web page in this mode, then perform the following steps to identify the Internet Explorer Add-on that is behind the problem:

1. Open Internet Explorer and then on the Tools menu, point to the Manage add-ons command and select the Enable or Disable Add-ons command.
2. Now, in the Manage Add-ons dialog box, first disable all add-ons and then enable them one by one.
3. After enabling each add on, try to open your Web page. If your Web page fails to open after you enable a particular add-on, then this add-on is the cause behind your problem.
4. After you have identified the problem add-on you may either leave it disabled or search for a solution regarding problems associated with the add-on.

Download Michael Jackson Thriller 25 Special Edition

Thriller 25 is the 25th Anniversary special edition reissue of the Michael Jackson album Thriller, the world's best selling album. The prospect of a "second chapter" to Thriller was first publicly discussed on Access Hollywood in late 2006. Jackson said he would discuss the idea with collaborator will.i.am. It was released in Australia on February 8, 2008, then internationally on February 11, 2008 and the following day in the United States.[3]

Thriller 25 was released by Sony BMG's re-issue division, Legacy Recordings. In the United Kingdom, the BBFC gave it a '15' Certificate because it included "Thriller". It is the first Jackson album with an age certificate. Along with the original material, the reissue contained remixes, new material, a DVD and collaborations with several contemporary artists.
